Ah, Thanksgiving! It’s my favorite holiday of the year. No pressure regarding gifts, religious differences, spending tons of money, etc. Just cooking good food and drinking good wine with friends and family. (And yes, I realize the problematic historical undertones - of course I don’t buy into all that “pilgrims and Native Americans were BFF!” stuff.)

To quote Seth Cohen:

“Do you know what I dream about when I dream about Thanksgiving, which is often? I dream about eating so much deliciousness that all the blood rushes to my stomach and I pass out at the table. Please don’t deny me that.”

Preach it, Seth!

Anyway, I’m having Thanksgiving down here with Rob’s family (first Texan Thanksgiving! Apparently we are busting out the deep fryers for turkey cooking purposes) and I wanted to contribute by making a statement. A delicious statement. A statement that can only be made by the best pumpkin dessert I have ever found: Pumpkin Cheesecake with Marshmallow-Sour Cream Topping and Gingersnap Crust.

I originally discovered this little slice of heaven through my similarly culinary-minded pal Chris, but it originated in Bon Apétit magazine a few years back. I promise it is the BEST. Bring it to a holiday party and it will disappear before your eyes. Be warned, though, if you make this once, your friends will beg you to make it again and again every year.

Here’s what mine looks like so far:

It’s huge! And yeah, cracked, but that doesn’t matter because I will slather it in a delicious top layer (I have to let it cool before I apply that marshmallow-sour cream topping). Can’t wait for this masterpiece to be complete… and more than that, I can’t wait to devour it tomorrow.

I’m not into most post-90s romantic comedies. Borrrring and formulaic. That being said, Silver Linings Playbook isn’t your typical romcom, even though it’s unfortunately being marketed as one. Here’s my overly gushing (but I don’t care! It was so good!) review.

Man, I just love my girl Jennifer Lawrence so much - Winter’s Bone, anyone? - and Bradley Cooper proved he’s more than just a pretty face. He can ACT.

Did you know you can make risotto (well, faux-risotto) out of quinoa? One of my favorite recipes I’ve created lately was whipped up purely out of desperation and laziness. Woohoo! One of my favorite shows, Top Chef, is premiering tonight. To sweeten the deal, it’s set in Seattle, my old city. I can’t wait to see which Northwest restaurants and chefs they feature this season.

Even cooler, I was on a press call with the one and only Wolfgang Puck to discuss what we can expect this season. Very exciting, I think I was a little starstruck!

My Endless Road Trip: Seattle series wrapped up today on Endless Simmer. Having lived in Seattle for almost seven years prior to my move to Austin, I consider myself quite the tastemaker… highlights including Cuban pork sandwiches, fiery Thai curry, and brisket breakfast sandwiches are bittersweet reminders of the culinary treats I gave up for my queso and breakfast tacos down here. (Not that I regret it! Life without queso isn’t life at all.)

Striking it Rich in Vegas

Last week I embarked on a Vegas adventure to witness my gorgeous friend, Katrin, and her awesome fiancé (now husband!), Morgan, tie the knot in the Valley of Fire. It was a beautiful ceremony, in every sense of the word - the glorious desert setting, the sunset champagne toast, the sweet and personal vows, Kat’s stunning dress. Kat and Morgan are incredibly generous and went all-out to make sure their guests (a group of hilarious, badass people who I loved spending time with) had FUN. We’re talking a pre-party at the Cosmopolitan’s Chandelier Bar, stretch Hummer limos to and from the ceremony, and a wine-fueled feast in a private room in the Venetian. This one was definitely a wedding for the books. I can’t thank Katrin and Morgan enough for such a memorable weekend.

Besides the wedding festivities, Rob and I enjoyed some quality time doing the usual Vegas stuff: pool parties, drinking ridiculously overpriced drinks in dumb novelty glasses, trying our luck at slot machines, pushing our caloric take to its limits at indulgent restaurants (including The Peppermill, my favorite place in Vegas!), depriving ourselves of sleep and water… it was Rob’s first(!) time to the ol’ Rack City, so I tried to show him the most comprehensive tour of Vegas possible.

Oh yeah, of course we had to take in a show: PEEPSHOW. Finally!!! Everyone knows I am weirdly obsessed with the original Girls Next Door and Holly Madison’s career, so obviously this was a real source of excitement. What that says about me, I’m not sure. I’m not ashamed to love me some slightly trashy burlesque entertainment, especially in the mother of all trashy entertainment.

All in all, I lost too much money thinking I actually understood how to play Blackjack (Spoiler alert: I don’t), but I still feel pretty rich - I experienced the wedding of two genuinely amazing people, plus relaxed with Rob for four luxurious days at Palms Place (stay there! It’s lavish yet chill!). The worst part of the trip was coming back to reality yesterday, but at least I got to take the best parts of the vacation home with me: the most awesome boyfriend/travel companion ever, photos capturing our epic weekend, and a plastic “collector’s cocktail cup” from the Palms pool that once held 32oz of strawberry-coconut rum.
